Canadian Producer Continues 25-Year-Plus Working Relationship With DEEP PURPLE Frontman
April 6, 2009Karen Bliss of JAM! Music reports: Canadian Nick Blagona continues his more than 25-year working relationship with DEEP PURPLE frontman Ian Gillan by producing, engineering, mixing and mastering his new solo album, "One Eye To Morocco", just released on Edel/Eagle Rock Entertainment.
"When there was word that Ian wanted to do another solo album, I thought it would be nice to do it in a different way," Blagona tells JAM! Music. "My idea was to have a sexier sounding album with a lot of curves, and that's what we did. We did softer songs and more of an R&B or a Memphis feel, more of a roots kind of thing that him and I grew up on."
The album was recorded during Gillan's break from DEEP PURPLE last spring and Blagona mixed it over the summer.
"Nick is an old-time producer," Gillan tells JAM! Music. "He understood exactly how to record things that a lot of people have forgotten. His input is exceptional. I have complete trust in him. Technically, he's second to none and experience-wise he's got a lot of empathy with the music and he's got a firm but gentle hand on the reins.
